MetaMask Snaps: It is now possible to use Tezos on MetaMask wallets!

With millions of users, MetaMask is the reference wallet for cryptocurrencies. However, some blockchains like Tezos are not compatible, forcing users to turn to other alternatives. Well Racers, know that this time is over! Thanks to the new MetaMask Snaps feature, the fox-headed wallet is now compatible with Tezos.

MetaMask Snaps: an interoperable and modular wallet

The news is still hot. ConsenSys, the parent company of MetaMask, has announced a new feature that could change a lot of things: MetaMask Snaps. In two words, this revolution will allow users to customize their crypto wallets as they wish.

But what does that mean in practice? It's relatively simple, you have to imagine that companies outside of ConsenSys now have the ability to create modules to add to MetaMask. These modules allow, among other things, to make the wallet compatible with blockchains that were previously inaccessible.

You understood Racers, our famous Tezos network is now supported by MetaMask, the most used wallet in the crypto ecosystem. No need to spread your assets around, they can be stored on a single wallet.

But what about security?

The question that should immediately come to your minds is: what about security? Indeed, given that any developer can develop a Snaps and offer it for download to users, the risk of coming across an infected and malicious tool seems high.

In reality, the 32 Snaps already offered by MetaMask and currently available on the marketplace have all undergone external and internal audits by the ConsenSys teams. In fact, the code is open-source since the GitHub link is systematically shared.

Of course, we always advise you to prioritize security and store your digital assets as much as possible through non-custodial and cold wallet solutions, while keeping a little money on hot wallets as needed. In this sense, Ledger wallets are probably the option to prioritize.

How to install Tezos on MetaMask?

Now let's get down to business! How to configure MetaMask to make it compatible with the Tezos network? To start, go to the official website, then click on the "Discover Snaps" button as shown in the image below.

In the tab that opens, you should see the entire list of available Snaps modules. Note that some of them simply allow you to improve your wallet, especially its security.

For example, we recommend taking a look at the "Assets Risk Detection" and MobyMask Phishing Warning modules. These modules allow you to detect if your assets are at risk and to notify you if you are about to be the victim of phishing.

Let's get back to our horses. In the search bar of the tab, type "Tezos". Normally, only one module is available. Select it and in the page that opens, click on "Add To MetaMask", as shown in the image below.

You will then need to validate the various approval requests in your wallet. Obviously, MetaMask Snaps modules are currently in beta, so we strongly advise you to remain vigilant. If you want to experiment with this feature, do it in a wallet freshly created for the occasion.

From there, you will be able to send yourself your digital assets from any centralized exchange platform or compatible digital wallet with the Tezos network, by entering the address of your wallet as the recipient.

Thus, you will be able to interact with the decentralized applications of the Tezos network, directly through MetaMask!
